If you follow My Buzzards Bay, then you know I’m a huge fan of going out to breakfast while in port. Today I continue my series of restaurant reviews for Nantucket with one of the top breakfast venues in New England – The Fog Island Cafe.
My criteria for a great breakfast restaurant isn’t complicated; hot food, quick service, good sized portions, and a pleasing atmosphere.
I love it when I find unusual specials and I’m generally turned off by places that leave the door or windows open early in the morning resulting in a temperature in the 60’s. It may be comfortable for the employees running around or cooking, but my food gets cold too fast!
Suffice it to say, Fog Island Cafe has none of these shortcomings and hit all of my top qualities.
They have a full menu with all the classics and a few unique specials…
Mrs. Horne ordered the Blue Berry Pancakes ($8.95) and they were loaded with blueberries, fluffy, and sweet…
Her sister Paula had a good appetite and ordered the Triple Double ($15.95)…
I’ve seen this in other great breakfast joints called The Lumberjack Special. This platter consists of 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, a side of bacon, and a side of sausage!
Fortunately, Paula had Mrs. Horne and I to help her finish this breakfast feast!
As I mentioned, I love unique specials and the Fog Island Cafe did not let me down. I ordered the Little Buddy Bene ($15.95).
This beauty looks like a classic Eggs Benedict from the top, but under the hood, it’s a true culinary delight. Instead of English Muffins, the platform is Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits. And rather than Canadian Bacon, the protein is handmade sausage patties.
I also judge my breakfast dishes on the Home Fries. The Fog Island Cafe serves up the diner classics created from leftover bakes potatoes and browned on the flat top. No foo-foo herbs or unusual seasonings – just salt and pepper.
This dish alone will bring me back!
And for Nantucket, the check didn’t break the bank!
If we end up doing a full week on Nantucket in June, I bet I’ll eat here twice!
